It’s becoming more common to hear upbeat messages in rap music, defying the usual down-and-dirty lyrics. (Even Bill Cosby has a "positive" rap album out, and there’s no mention of Jell-O pudding pops at all!)

Here are a couple from some unusual sources — one from a ‘60s soul legend, and the other from an award-winning "gangsta-lit" mystery writer.

Singer-songwriter Rufus Wonder of Oakland is best known for his soul hits "Under the Moon" and "So Upset." Once a rising star, Wonder’s career took different paths. But when he lost his sight about 10 years ago, his focus returned to music. Now, instead of love songs or soulful ballads, he wants to share sentiments of peace.
